Permanent Residence (Green Card) Petitions for Family Members of U.S. Citizens & Permanent Residents

Immediate Relative of a U.S. Citizen

U.S. citizens may petition for qualified relatives to have permanent residence in the United States. Eligible immediate relatives include the U.S. citizen’s spouse, unmarried children under the age of 21 and parents (if the U.S. citizen is over the age of 21).

Immediate relatives have special immigration priority and there are an unlimited number of visas for their particular categories. They do not have to wait for a visa number to become available for them.

There are different processes for getting a Green Card while inside the United States and while outside the United States. Please contact us for more details or to schedule a personalized consultation.

Family Member of a U.S. Citizen

U.S. citizens may also petition for relatives that fall in USCIS’s “family preference category” to have permanent residence in the United States. Eligible relatives that qualify for the “family preference category” include the U.S. citizen’s unmarried sons or daughters over the age of 21, married child(ren) of any age, and siblings (if the U.S. citizen petitioner is over the age of 21). Only a limited number of individuals may immigrate to the Unites States each year under this category. There is usually a waiting period before an immigrant visa number becomes available.
